Playdough Recipe

Playdough Recipe

Ingredients

1 cup of flour

1/2 cup of salt

2 tbsp. of cream of tartar

1 tbsp. of oil – not sesame or peanut oil

Food colouring

1 cup of boiling water

Directions

Mix all ingredients except the boiling water together into a large mixing bowl.

Add the boiling water and mix well. (Note, the food colouring will mix in better if added to the boiling water.) Please take care when using boiling water around children.

Stir well until the mixture is well combined.

Roll it out on a flat surface and you are ready for some playdough FUN!
***Please note: Due to a rainy forecast for tomorrow, the Terry Fox Run has been moved to October 6th, with a rain date of October 8th.***

For Mystery Monday, we looked at some poppy seed pods from Mme Chantal's parents' garden. The students were very good at guessing that they were from flowers.  This lead to an early discussion about Remembrance Day and how poppies grew in fields after the war. Once again the students suggested that we should plant the seeds! We also talked about plants needing water, sun and soil. Now, we have not had much luck with any of our plantings so far so we have decided to only plant half of the poppy seeds and keep the other half to plant in the Spring, just in case...

We will be changing our Dramatic Play Area to a pumpkin patch this week. We had a brainstorming session to figure out what we would see in a pumpkin patch.  The students decided we needed to include a scarecrow, some pumpkins and gardening tools. We are looking for old Daddy/Grandpa/uncle clothes to dress our scarecrow. We will be making paper mache pumpkins so we would also appreciate old newspapers or flyers. Thank you so much!

Here are some new learning centers we explored today:

We continued our Fall inquiry this morning with Mrs. Melissa. She brought in some apples that had just fallen from the apple tree in her back yard. We wondered if these apples also had seeds in them. We cut some of the apples in half and found some smaller seeds in the core. We decided we should try planting those seeds too!

Friday 18 September 2015

Welcome to our classroom blog. Our goal this year will be to send out a simple blog every day highlighting a few of the children's favorite activities of the day and what they learned from them.

Here are some of the highlights from the first two weeks of school.
We have had a focus on the start of Fall, particularly crab apples and apples and the differences between them. The children wondered where they came from and if they both had seeds. We also discussed the different kinds of apples there are, how some are sweet and some are sour, and how we know if they are ripe.  We are now attempting to grow the apple seeds and two acorn seeds together in class (fingers crossed).

Next week we will continue our Fall inquiries and continue entering into the exploration of space. Within the classroom we have begun to work with the children to create a space station and they are certainly blasting off into their new school year.
