Ash Wednesday and Lent Information

“Lent gives us the opportunity to cultivate a spirit of generosity. It gives us a chance to share what we have and who we are with other people”. (Our Sunday Visitor, 2013)
February 13, 2018
Dear Parents,
Lent is a special time to continue our journey in faith, to think about what Jesus gave us, and to remember that He died for us. His gift is a reminder for us to share in His journey of faith by giving to others in need, to pray, and to make sacrifices.
Every year, during the Lenten period, the St. Francis school community supports a worthwhile international project. This year, our fundraising efforts will focus on The Chalice. The Chalice is a Catholic charity that was founded in 1996 and works in developing countries “to improve child education, health, and family livelihood”. The Chalice provides the opportunity to buy a variety of items with their Give a Gift program in the following areas: farming, education, household, nutrition, and health. Gifts include chicks, seeds, school supplies, blankets, milk … You can find more information at http://www.chalice.ca/. Based on the amounts students raise in their class, they will then discuss and choose their class gift.
We will have five (5) fundraising events, to be held on each Thursday of Lent. We encourage students to earn their donations by doing extra chores.
February 15:  PJ Day
February 22: Team Jersey Day
March 1:  Crazy Hair Day
March 8:  Grade Colour Day
March 22:  World water day-wear blue, drink from reusable water bottle
In our Catholic faith, Lent is a time for giving alms, for prayer, and for making sacrifices. Giving alms is our response to the teachings of Jesus who asks us to reach out to people in need.
Thank you for your continuing support,
The Lenten Committee
